The Myth(s) of Making it
Launching Culture House Office Hours & Samhita Mukhopadhyay's new book
Hi Friends!!
I hope you are enjoying your bonus Friday after the midweek Juneteenth holiday. In a disclosure that will shock literally no one that has ever worked with, for or next to me, I am very much in the Pro camp for a 4 day work week.
Don't get me wrong, if you're going to work, you may as well work hard. I just think concentrated sprints of work surrounded by equal (or greater) amounts of time spent languidly and lavishly, is a more elegant approach to life. Goals, amirite?
Alas, such is not *yet* the life for us entrepreneurs, creatives, makers and doers, parents, and 'reliable ones' of all varieties. At Culture House there is nearly always someone moving at full speed. But one of the greatest assets we have as a company is each other: Rae, Nicole, Mikhael, Jaimie, Shawna, Kierna, Geoffrey, Scarlett, Meredith, Cindy, Melissa, Nicole H, Jenny, Angela, Doreen, Bri, Surina, me (Carri). All of us.
We get to run a relay race, picking up the baton for a head down sprint, but knowing there is someone nearby to pass off to when it's time to rest. We haven't perfected these hand-offs yet, but even when we mess it up, we do it together.
Cheers to that right?
So who at Culture House is holding the baton this week? Mikhael is.
How Immersive Entertainment Can Change The World
Culture House Immersive Co-Founder and CXO Mikhael Tara Garver gave a keynote talk at the 2024 XP Fronts in Montreal this spring. In her talk Mikhael lays out the case for why immersive entertainment is not only the future, but an exciting and rare opportunity to build presence and belonging through fandom and narrative. Mikhael brought her 20+ years of experience to Culture House to found our immersive studio, an Avengers-style collective of leaders in the immersive, theatrical, gaming, and technology spaces. TRENDING… Team work makes the dream work
We know how lucky we are at Culture House to have each other to lean on. The thing we hear most often (when we can get ourselves off zoom and into the real world) is how many of you wish you had someone to bounce ideas off of, get advice from, or just gut check with. Well…time to share the wealth.
Introducing Culture House Office Hours!!!!
Every week the Culture House co-founders and special guests from the team will answer questions submitted from our community via LinkedIN, IG and email.
Should you go to grad school? How can you get the credit you deserve? How do I get my project off the ground? How do you pick a business partner? We all need a sounding board. We don't promise to have all the answers, but we will give you our honest opinions, thoughts, and share our own lived experiences from our work and lives. Take and use what works for you, and leave the rest.
IN THE CULTURE Readers are Leaders y'all
It's all well and good to get the advice you need to propel yourself to the top. But what if you are running the wrong race?
"Far too many of us are taught that we need to work ourselves to the bone to live a good life. That we just need to climb up the corporate ladder, to “lean in” and “hustle,” to enact change." - Samhita Mukhopadhyay
Culture House icon Samhita Mukhopadhyay's new book not only shows us the definitions of success we are taught are myths, she gives you the tools you need to slip the trap of the BS we've been fed about ambition, accomplishment, and value. Samhita is a beautifully clear and honest author, graciously sharing her story so that we can more fully live out our own. Trust me, order Samhita's book, The Myth of Making It. available now. (also, check out her Substack here)
As a Bonus Read, check out this fantastic interview between Samhita and Cindi Leive for their publication The Meteor: Have We Been Thinking About Ambition All Wrong?
We can bury the girlboss, but what comes next? The former executive editor of Teen Vogue tells the story of her personal workplace reckoning and argues for collective responsibility to reimagine work as we know it.
“As I sat in the front row that day, I was 80 percent faking it with a 100-percent-real Gucci bag.” Samhita Mukhopadhyay had finally made it: she had her dream job, dream clothes—dream life. But time and time again, she found herself sacrificing time with family and friends, paying too much for lattes, and limping home after working twelve hours a day. Success didn’t come without costs, right? Or so she kept telling herself. And Mukhopadhyay wasn’t alone:
Go get 'em this weekend! Rest & relax as hard as you possibly can. We believe in you.
Xo,
Carri, Rae & Nicole
