HOUSE NEWS... Juneteenth, for the Culture
This year to celebrate Juneteenth, the Obama Foundation decided to highlight several people within the alumni community whose work uplifts the Black community and echoes the values of President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. I am so honored (🥹😭😭) that I was one of the alum selected because of the work we do here at Culture House. I will share more about my exchange with the Foundation and how the legacy of the Obamas influences me still at my personal Substack
later this weekend 💌Or, you can read more here: Obama leaders carrying the legacy of Juneteenth, or if you happen to be in South Florida and bump into my dad, he can read it aloud, to you, repeatedly, until you beg him to stop. He’s very, very proud.
If you want to have FUN in South Florida though…we have something else for you!
Culture House Immersive is in Miami!
Co-Founder & Head of Culture House Immersive Mikhael here! I’ll be on the road again next week at the Miami Immersive Intensive. I was invited by my pals at Juggernaut Theatre Company to launch the conference talking about How We Human Together and then Head of Talent Development, Kierna Conner, and I will be leading a workshop on Immersive Involvement. We will be stopping by to hatch immersive plots and plans with our incredible incubator co-producers at Arsht Center and meeting up with the incomparable Dan Goldman from Red Light Properties. Will you be in Miami!? DM Me!!!!
TRENDING…Being independent
Whether producing a film, creating a podcast, or celebrating a holiday (ahem), the value of independent creation, distribution, celebration has never felt like more of a strategic imperative. Now, don’t get me wrong, when I say independent, I don’t necessarily mean alone. You know if you’ve followed us that community is at the heart of everything we do. We are pack animals here at Culture House. But we also deeply believe in doing this on our own terms, on our own timelines, and following our own instincts about what is both right and possible.
Enter our friend, and a literal icon, director Fawzia Mirza. We had the chance to see the unforgettable premiere of Fawzia’s, The Queen of My Dreams, at SXSW last year and have literally been dreaming about it since. After spending the year blowing away audiences at every festival, and scooping up accolades it finally arrives in theaters across the country, TODAY!
The Queen of My Dreams is a masterclass in creativity but also community wide collaboration. What it takes to successfully launch a truly independent film, is basically everyone in the community showing up to pitch in. What I’m saying is: It’s Your Time To Shine. Buy tickets for you and the fam/friends, go see this absolutely sensational film, buy the merch before you even leave the theater, then post about the film so all your followers go see it too 🥰😎
Get your tickets here: Queen of My Dreams Tix and get the flyyyyy merch they have for the film here: Queen of My Dreams MERCH (if you see me in the street this summer you will 100% see me in one of these Baby Ts 🫡)
IN THE CULTURE
Twigg & Jenkins is BACK!!!! Brad and I finally aligned our schedules to be in the same place at the same time. On the eve of No Kings, we sat with Anu Joshi the National Director of Campaigns for Immigration at the ACLU and talked everything No Kings as well as how immigration got to be the literal dumpster fire that it is today. Even as someone who pays close attention to what’s happening, it was so so helpful to me to get the context of why immigration feels so chaotic and hellacious.
More episodes will be dropping over the course of the next few weeks so be sure to like and subscribe anywhere you get podcasts!
