HOUSE NEWS
The Level Ground x Culture House Lunch in LA 🔥🥳

A little bit of free advice, take generals! Culture House started by Carri & Rae agreeing to a friend blind date, and now thanks to a general set up by our agents, Culture House and the incredible Level Ground are prod co besties. We are also collaborators on a new initiative to support film & TV projects and artists that are advancing narratives that reshape, or offer new frameworks for understanding gender and sexuality in the mainstream.
Level Ground is an award-winning artist collective and production company that supports Black, brown, trans, and queer artists, projects, and audiences, exploring the edges of genre and story. Co-founded by the extraordinary Chase Joynt and Samantha Curley after their wildly successful collaboration on Framing Agnes. Read more about their current film UNION here (and much much more on that later).
At the beginning of the year we gathered a small group for a brunch during Sundance, and this week in LA we gathered a slightly larger group to talk about two projects we will be supporting and the power of narrative change. It was chic, fun and informative, everything we aspire to be. Do you have a project that is directly addressing issues and possibilities related to gender and/or sexuality? If so, get in touch! we are eager to build our ecosphere! Esme@culture.house
TRENDING… Narrative Change
If you are reading this newsletter I don’t need to explain for you the power of a story. You know that we are innately meaning-making creatures who act based on the stories we tell ourselves. and that telling ourselves new stories, eventually leads to new outcomes. What works on the individual level, works on the societal level as well.
Thats why at Culture House we are obsessed with the power of narrative change. By intentionally crafting new narratives, we can bypass rational resistance and speak directly to deeply held values and identities. When people shift their fundamental stories about what is possible, necessary, or true, their behaviors and choices naturally evolve to align with these new narratives. The most successful narrative changes don't just critique existing stories but offer compelling alternative visions that people can see themselves in and feel emotionally drawn toward.
We need not only new, but more stories that shape our world and our futures. And we need them fast. Stories about the environment, about gender, about economic fairness and women’s health. Stories of beauty and expansiveness about trans identities and lives.
Part of the collaboration between Level Ground and Culture House is helping in small but meaningful ways to accelerate getting potent and important stories into the world. I’d love to tell you about our first two projects, and if you want to get involved and support, email us at Esme@Culture.House and we will connect you to the filmmakers.
SEE YOU TOMORROW || directed by Chase Joynt, produced by Samantha Curley
Beverly Glenn-Copeland was in his 70s when his album “Keyboard Fantasies” – recorded 30 years prior – found a global audience and changed the course of his life. Ten years later, Glenn now reckons with the early stages of dementia, while endeavoring to fulfill his life’s mission to nurture future generations through his singular music and art. SEE YOU TOMORROW follows Glenn and his wife and creative partner Elizabeth on an intimate journey as they navigate the implications of Glenn’s recent diagnosis, contemplating high stakes, complex decisions about the end of Glenn’s life while embarking on a mission to preserve his artistic legacy. They perform with artists who cite Glenn as an inspiration — including Sam Smith and Solange. SEE YOU TOMORROW sculpts a deeply emotional and other-worldly portrait of an unsuspecting icon at the end of his extraordinary life and career.
If you are not familiar with Glenn’s spectacular music, now is the perfect time: Beverly Glenn-Copeland on Spotify.
WE ARE PAT || directed by Ro Haber, produced by Caryn Capotosto
WE ARE PAT is a feature length documentary exploring the evolution of gender identity and comedy from the 90s until today through the lens of the iconic SNL sketch, It’s Pat. It follows the first ever cohort of trans and non-binary comedians as they support each other through the intense political landscape and rise to stardom. Trans and non-binary comedians and culture-makers reimagine and rewrite the original Pat sketches, using camp and humor to reclaim and re-envision an iconic character in American comedy.
Both of these projects are amplifying and expanding existing culture to leverage a new narrative. We are so excited to be a small part of helping both of these powerful stories get into the world.
IN THE CULTURE
The best book I’ve read all year🚨
I read a lot. Like, a lot, a lot. I love books, as you know we talk some of our favorites here. Over Thanksgiving I read a truly phenomenal book: Vantage Points: On Media as Trans Memoir by Chase Joynt.
Y’all. Buy this book, read it, let it awe you, shock you, break your heart, stir your imagination, show you how much you don’t know, then gently teach you some of it.
Joynt writes about difficult pasts and connects them to contemporary politics and ways of being, employing McLuhan's seminal Understanding Media as an inciting framework. Vantage Points is a kaleidoscopic reckoning with the impact of media and masculinity on the stories we tell about ourselves and our families, a unique and highly visual approach to trans life writing, and an experimental move between gender and genre.
Thats it for this week!! Happy holiday party season! sending you lots of love, luck and vibes for great outfits.
xo,
Carri, Rae, Nicole & Mikhael
Can't wait for SYT!
